Before I start this discussion I wanted to let you know that I am not some trendy leftist or socialist. I grew up in the 80s in Essex and I was a typical Essex man. White socks, Ford Capri, West Ham supporter and most importantly a Tory voter. Where I grew up you were more likely to see Elvis Presley singing with Buddy Holly in Woolworths than a Labour voter. Let alone a Labour member of parliament.

However, over the past decade, the Tory party has become so dysfunctional and useless is now really a national embarrassment, It is also very dangerous because the Tories are in government, which means they are (or should be) running and steering the country.

There were lies and mismanagement around BREXIT. It is not a secret that I am a strong remainer but BREXIT did offer some fantastic opportunities for the UK but these are wasted by Tory infighting and pandering to the minority far right within the Tory party. The result was a poor trade deal from the UK’s point of view.

There was also the disaster of the 40-day Lizz Truss premiership whose budget almost caused a financial collapse. And yet some people in the Tory party still think she is a good leader.

There were parties and blatant rule-breaking in 10 Downing Street during the COVID-19 lockdown while people out in the ‘real world’ were locked away, not seeing family and friends, and missing loved ones. I reckon it will take many years if not decades for the general public to trust the Tories again over this.

Also, the recent COVID-19 enquiry has uncovered some disgusting behaviours. Apart from the filthy language and personal abuse, there was a complete lack of togetherness and focus on addressing the COVID-19 problems. This is terrifying because God knows how many lives this cost.

At the time of writing the Home Secretary is starting a Tory Party leadership bid. She has made headline-grabbing statements regarding biased police, pro-Palestinian marches, immigration ‘invasions’ and homelessness as a lifestyle choice. Clearly, she is trying to get sacked to become a right-wing martyr, which will supercharge her leadership a bit.

Years ago we used to look down on the countries that had ineffective governments and say the same could never happen in the UK. But how this has changed now

The only real option is for a general election immediately and unless something drastic changes then it will be a complete wipeout for the Tories (which quite frankly I think they deserve). Although this wipe-out could allow the Tory party to reinvent themselves.

Having said that I am not 100% sure the Labour Party has any great ideas or new policies themselves but could they be worse than the current Tory party?
